I will buy. I was already a few pages in when I felt a bit lost, and then Family Spy remembered that manga is supposed to be read right to left my bad. Click action scenes were my favourite because (Band) Live are a complete tossback to retro comics from thes to s with a splatter of ostentatious special effects texts and continue reading beatings of baddies—it all works so marvellous to create a truly entertaining and engrossing manga reading experience. Yeah, that last part was new. So fun, kickass and hilarious. That dean's face needs a meme. This is one of those cases in which the concept can carry the series way beyond any single arc. Spychiatrist Loid Forger got in trouble because of Detective Anya and her amazing notetaking lol. Yor imagining showing Anya her job was just as hilarious.
I love this family. Holy shiitake, this chapter kept giving me mini heart attacks, from Yor taking Anya to her job to Loid looking at Anya's notes.
This chapter was a treasure, man. We got a new Anya smug face, we got insight into Yor's job and Loid's cover story, and it was overall a delight.
I also gotta mention that Yor gets Anya into a dress similar to hers in her imagine spot lol. I was fearing another Anya-centric chapter, nothing wrong with that but i think the other Forgers also need some space.
With this chapter we got both, new details about Lyod Spychiathrist,so simple so genius why no one even thought about before?
Most of the chapter though is about the Lyod-Anya relationship and is funny how our master spy is starting to serious worring about his "daughter's"mental wellfere "why are all buried?
I love that in her gibberish notes, Anya attempted to draw Bond on the bottom-right corner hahah. Can't say it's much better than her paper mache figure of him!
It does fit perfect thou. A lot of scientist at that time are accused of espionage. It's still even happening today. The other thing now concerns me is Yor's organization.
She seems to work for a group that has enough capacity to collect a lot of intel against their enemies and send someone to destroy them.
Based on what she taught about, her organization is a secret private military force. Now my question is, who owns them? If they are the enemy Loid is tasked to eliminate, won't he and Yor fight in the future?
I have a feeling that the mangaka hasn't yet decided whether to pitch Yor against Loid or not. From what we've seen so far, Loid is involved more with inter country conflicts while Yor deals with inside-the-country stuff.
Like that gang she busted. Also, yeah, the setting of her contract work definitely feels private instead of government seeing how Yor too is afraid of the SSS.
Her fear of them is my single ray of hope that we won't see Yor and Loid fighting against each other. It's hard to tell if those gangs are doing something that can put a country at risk, like smuggling high powered weapons and such into the city which can really put everyone in alert or just doing some extortion and kidnapping that the police should handle.
Yor isn't high enough the organization to gain access in that kind of intel and she's pretty content at her current position so there's no chance of that's happening in the future unless the mangaka decide to do something drastic, like the organization is forcing her to rank up due to unknown reasons.
I get the feeling that anya will grow up to be a psychiatrist out of respect and love for Lloyd and also her telepathy. That or a spy.
Both work out well but I think its more likely to be the former as I doubt Lloyd would want children, no less his own daughter working as a spy.
While I generally love manga and anime as a medium, I usually struggle with the sometimes childish humor that is often used to undercut serious moments.
Not every manga is like this, obviously, but many, especially the ones from Shonen Jump. So I'm still surprised every time I laugh out loud with Anya's antics, even though it has become a frequent occurrence.

From first glance, it wouldn't seem as if the three of them would be able to mesh together but once they find themselves in some hijinks and tight situations, we really get to see how well they work together.
I just adored their family dynamic. So fun, kickass and hilarious. Thumbs up to great pacing and a great start to a series, this is definitely one I'll continue on with and one I'm certain many people will find themselves enjoying as well.
Part spy caper, part family comedy, part batshit crazy - turns out that's the perfect formula. Full review eventually appearing on ANN.
Twilight is a master spy who always completes his mission no matter what he has to do. I just loved this little family. Well first I fell for a Twilight who is a debonair spy and knows how to do everything elegantly and with flair.
And he takes his missions very seriously. I loved Twilight but especially Twilight with Anya, our little telepath. Yor is really so cutely dense about social situations but comes to the rescue at the funniest times.
She fits Twilight so well already. I can already see her bond with her new husband and child.
The art is soooooo good! The character designs really fit them so well and I just love how their super cool looks contrasts with the funny plot.
Spy x Family vol 1 was a wonderful start to a new manga series. Aug 31, Michelle rated it it was amazing. I am now dying to read the next update!
Thanks again, Amy. You've ruined me!! The most wholesome manga ever. Slick art, impeccable comedic timing, well paced character development.
Easily among the best manga currently on Jump. It's such a cute quirky story so far, and the whole accidental wholesomeness of this 'family' is just too much.
This was honestly one of the most enjoyable mangas I have ever read. I know it is only the first volume, but I am already so invested into this series.
As I was reading, I was mostly laughing hysterically! The father, an extremely talented spy, is tasked to assemble a fake family in order to complete his newest mission.
As he is completely accustomed to working alone and gave up any notion of ever having a family, this proves to be quite a challenge for him.
Unknowingly, he manages to get a wife This was honestly one of the most enjoyable mangas I have ever read. Unknowingly, he manages to get a wife who is an assassin and a daughter who is a telepath.
They all have their own reasons to agreeing to this arrangement, but it is extremely comical to watch them try to pass as a normal family.
I also want to point out how much I enjoy the art in general. Every reaction, facial expression, etc. The face Anya makes when she overhears something sketchy is priceless!
If you're looking for a fun, light read, please read this manga! This volume was quite fun actually. We have a spy, and assassin, and a telepathic young girl who form a family for the spy's mission.
The way everything comes together in this volume was really sweet. I really enjoyed my reading experience of this first volume, and fully intent to pick up a physical copy once they are available!
Thanks to Viz and NetGalley for my early digital review copy! I got a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Whenever I find a book I really love I find it hard to review. This was everything I wanted and more and it's a story I didn't even know I needed in my life until now.
The characters were amazing and I am completely obsessed with them all. I just couldn't get over how this author managed to make me fall so in love so quickly.
Spy x Family has the perfect balance of plot, humor, character interactions and action sequences. Seriously please pick this up you will not be disappointed.
I have this one preordered because I need to read the physical copy asap. Amazing I can not wait for the next book in the series.
S Please be here soon! Aug 17, Elenora rated it it was amazing. Was wondering why everyone was raving about it so hard Well it's because it's one of the best manga I've read, that's why.
The art is cool, the characters are awesome, and the humour is off the charts. He ends up coming across a couple of gifted oddballs in their own right, completely unbeknownst to him, which make his efforts at completing the missions at hand far more complicated than need be.
However, they also show him that a family life may not be completely out of the question for a spy either. Little did I know that by the time I finished the first volume, I would be gleefully in love with Twilight, his new family, and just about everything this series has to offer.
It is without a doubt one of the best newer manga serials that I have read. Twilight, our main character, is marvellously endearing.
Between his high intelligence and fighting capabilities and deductive prowess, he reminds me so much of characters from vintage spy films from the s.
The hairstyles and the dapper fashion attires of the men and women are also very retro and chic akin to the time period.
The way that the manga portrays elegance and class structure is done in a manner as to ridicule the outrageous pretentiousness of Western ideals on those very concepts, but with a sleek soft-toned comedic approach that is distinctly Japanese.
The foreshadowing and the smaller details in the background illustrations or public dialogue exchanges around Twilight and his family i.
Even with these attributes, the characters really make this manga series shine like a beacon in the night. The final element that ties all the elements together into a stunning package of must-read proportions is the artwork.
It is an excellent complement to the humour, which is a brilliant combination of whimsy satire, dry wit, and almost cartoon-like cheesy quips.
Pages full of white, clean drawings with a sporadic use of shading and sharp lines give the manga a stunningly unputdownable aura.
My eyes felt enticed by how beautiful everything was, especially the character designs and the action sequences. The action scenes were my favourite because they are a complete tossback to retro comics from thes to s with a splatter of ostentatious special effects texts and exaggerated beatings of baddies—it all works so marvellous to create a truly entertaining and engrossing manga reading experience.
There are so many panels that I would love to frame and hang up on my walls because of how utterly superb they are. Overall, Spy x Family Volume 1 is one of the finest new manga that I have come across and I cannot wait to read the next volume.
Twilight and his fabricated family is probably my favourite family unit in fiction right now. They are just a masterpiece portrait of individuals who are extremely different yet come together to formulate the most charming and—to certain degrees—realistic portrayal of what family means, dysfunction and all.
Please note that I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review, courtesy of Viz Media. I have a new favourite manga series. That was good.
I received this graphic novel from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. A Goodreads friend of mine read this recently and gave it a great review so I was excited to see it on NetGalley.
I've been struggling to keep my mind focused what with everything that is going on in the world right now and this graphic novel was just the ticket.
This is a fun and entertaining read. The story is about a spy who is given an assignment which requires him to have a wife and a child.
Volume 1 tells the sto I received this graphic novel from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Volume 1 tells the story of how he goes about acquiring said family.
They are not your 'normal' family. Not only is the 'dad' a spy, but 'mum' is an assassin and their 'daughter' is a telepath.
I really enjoyed the dynamics between the characters and how everything unfolded. The artwork is really good too.
I've read a number of graphic novels before but this is the first manga one and I really liked the style. I highly recommend it and I will definitely be carrying on with the series.
Ah, this was really cute and had some fun action to boot. The through-line about this ramshackle assemblage coming to care for one another as a real family is expected, but carried off nicely.
Anya, the Ah, this was really cute and had some fun action to boot. Anya, the daughter, is a ton of fun and could have been really annoying if done poorly.
View 2 comments. Four and a half stars. This is a very recent series with only 11 chapters, and I'm reviewing everything available. An awesome, wholesome story that I can already see becoming a classic.
This is one of those cases in which the concept can carry the series way beyond any single arc. The story takes place in two fictional countries somewhat based on central Europe, a fantastical version in which classical architecture reigns and everyone is white it's odd how Japan tends to have more respect for our Four and a half stars.
The story takes place in two fictional countries somewhat based on central Europe, a fantastical version in which classical architecture reigns and everyone is white it's odd how Japan tends to have more respect for our civilization than most people here have for it these days.
The country to the east hates the western one, and viceversa. The protagonist is a masterful spy from the western country operating on the eastern one.
He's been tasked with infiltrating an elite school to spy on the father of one of the students there, a reclusive man with a plan that could spark a world war.
However, the protagonist cannot attend the school by himself, so he needs to procure himself a child, and that school won't allow students of unmarried parents, so he needs a wife as well.
Predictably, the protagonist has avoided human attachments of any kind in order to do his job, so he's entering uncharted territory.
He finds his fake daughter in an orphanage. She happens to be adorable, and an esper able to read people's minds. Later on he crosses paths with a woman in need to find a boyfriend to keep up appearances: she's actually a very sought after assassin for the western country, and people at her temp job keep prying into her private life in a way which could interfere with her actual profession.
We have then three unlikely people that as the chapters go on find themselves more comfortable with their fake family than they would have ever expected.
The spying stuff is a mix of Bond and Bourne movies. The focus is on the characters, three people who have never had normal relationships and that have to learn from each other.
The protagonist quickly stops seeing his fake daughter as disposable; in the beginning he considered sending her back to the orphanage for any inconvenience.
The daughter is particularly endearing not only because of her sweet personality but because, being able to read people's minds, she knows that her fake father is a spy, she knows that her fake mother is an assassin, and as she doesn't want to become a lab rat again, she keeps her own secret to herself.
It's a lot of fun to see her helping her fake father on whatever international spying-related mess they've gotten themselves into, and how prying into her fake mother's mind often involves learning about recent murders, dismembering people, and how she resists solving every problem through murdering most people around.
I find the assassin quite interesting: she got into that business by necessity, as she had to care for her little brother and she just happened to be instinctively suited to killing people.
She combines an emotional instability and tendency towards murder with a genuine kindness and wish to protect her new family, fake or not; I'm thinking of a scene in which she kicks a guy into the ceiling because she thought he was kidnapping the daughter.
In all these series I end up loving there's a particular moment when I know I'm going to follow it to the end. In this one it happened when the protagonist was attempting to convince the assassin to marry him, but view spoiler [a bunch of smugglers from an operation he recently disrupted ram their car and try to kill them.
On the run, after displaying some of her own techniques, she lets him know that she'd be fine with marrying as well.
The protagonist realizes that he's lost the diamond ring he "borrowed" from the smugglers, and that he was going to use to propose, but he looks around and finds a grenade that some dead bad guy dropped.
Then this happens click for a bigger image : hide spoiler ]. I don't know about any other previous manga by this author, but the script is tight and clever, and the art is sharp.
The elaborate backgrounds, particularly related to buildings, leave that relatively common impression in some mangas that they hired a single artist for that purpose.
I'm looking forward to the next chapters. Despite the spying stuff and general zaniness, I already care quite a bit about the characters.
There are interesting conflicts in the horizon: how will the fake parents react when they learn about the girl's ability to read people's minds?
How will the assassin working for the eastern country react when she realizes she's married to a spy from the western one?
Will the woman's brother, who works as an interrogator for an organization somewhat modeled after the SS, find out that his sister is married to a foreign spy?
Good times. I really like the story so far! This is hilarious! Not a big manga fan, but this was so fun. The characters are ridiculous and yet they form a surprisingly sweet and remarkably functional family.
Can't wait to read more of their adventures. This is a heartwarming story about finding family in the most unexpected of places with the most unexpected people.
The main characters, Twilight, the spy, has to become a father and husband to Anya, a telepathic child, and Yor, an assassin.
All three of them need something that each other can give and the story portrays this in such a way that over time, they realize that they've really come to care and depend on one another, as quirky as they all are.
The art style is unique and well-done comp This is a heartwarming story about finding family in the most unexpected of places with the most unexpected people.
The art style is unique and well-done compared to other manga I've read and aids in portraying the variety of emotions and situations the characters go through.
This manga is non-stop action and intrigue as the reader comes to learn more about the characters and the world of deception they live in.
Although they appear to all be deceiving on another, they have the best intentions at heart, which makes this manga a fun experience.
The people they interact with, whether good guys or bad guys, draws the family into helping one another and brings them even closer.
As they grow together as a family, they come to learn how to be 'normal' in the sense that makes them feel safe and happy with one another, despite their secrets and that maybe, just maybe, they should stick together in the long run.
I admit, I was slightly apprehensive about a spy manga story with its type of premise of a fake family but the art, setting, and characters drew me in and seem almost believable and definitely have me invested in learning more about this unconventional family and how they will end up in the end.
I am hoping for a positive ending! Overall, it is an enjoyable series, and I greatly look forward to the next volume!
May 03, Ashley rated it it was amazing Shelves: manga. It's been a while since I've started a new manga series for my own enjoyment rather than committee work.
This one was a charmer! Was not expecting so much heart or for everyone to be a little awkward in their own way.
Mar 16, Daniella rated it liked it.I also think and hope that Loid will eventually come check this out to the idea of having "a family" and something wholesome will bloom as a result fingers crossed.
